Awards of up to $1,000 for medical, living, or other emergencies. Open to
artists of all disciplines with no U.S. geographical restrictions; students
are not eligible. Each applicant must submit a detailed letter describing the
financial emergency, copies of outstanding bills, medical fee estimates, etc.,
and current financial statements, along with a career resume, exhibition or
performance announcements, slides or photos of work and two letters of
reference from someone in the affiliated field (no video tapes). Only
complete applications will be accepted. Change, Inc., does not issue more than
one grant per person.

Springboard’s emergency Relief Fund exists to help meet the emergency needs of
artists in need of immediate monies to cover an expense due to loss from fire,
theft, health emergency, or other catastrophic, career-threatening event.
Started by artists, the purpose of the Emergency Relief Fund is to expedite
recovery from a specific economic crisis so that the artist applicant may
continue their work. Artists may access up to $500 to meet or defray
unexpected “emergency” expenses. (Payment is made directly to the creditor,
not the artist).

The PEN Writers Fund is an emergency fund for professionally published or
produced-writers with serious financial difficulties. Depending on the
situation, the fund gives grants or loans of up to $2,000. The maximum amount
is given only under especially dire circumstances and when monies are
available.
The PEN Fund for Writers and Editors with HIV/AIDS, administered under the
PEN Writers Fund, gives grants of up to $2,000 to professional writers and
editors who face serious financial difficulties because of HIV or AIDS-related
illness. The Writers Fund does not exist for research purposes, to enable the
completion of writing projects, or to fund publications or organizations. The
Writers Fund committee meets approximately every two months to review
applications.

The Authors League Fund was established by the Authors League of America,
Inc., to help career authors and dramatists in the United States and in
financial distress due to an urgent situation. The Fund makes interest-free
loans to professional writers in need; for example, writers with health
problems and inadequate health insurance, or older writers whose income has
ceased. Loan-seekers must show need and documentation of their professional

Financial relief assistance to established, professional freelance writers of
nonfiction books and magazine articles. Must be 60 years of age or older,
disabled, or who face crisis.

The American Poets Fund, which provides confidential assistance to poets in
the event of illness or emergency; gives many awards, including The Walt
Whitman Award for a first book of poetry; and has an award-winning Web site
which serves as a resource for writers and poets.

The Foundation provides ten individual support grants to painters, sculptors,
and printmakers who have been working for a minimum of 20 years in a mature
phase of their art and have financial need. They also administer an emergency
assistance program year-round, which assists artists suffering from recent
catastrophic circumstances, who have worked for a minimum of ten years in a
mature phase of their art.

Craft Emergency Relief Fund is committed to supporting the careers of craft
artists throughout the United States. Through business and
career-strengthening programs, emergency relief support, advocacy and research
CERF helps professional craft artists strengthen and sustain their careers so
that they can thrive and, thus, contribute to the quality of life in our
communities.

The CAC is an artist-run coalition of visual artists who strive to educate,
advocate, provide services, and improve the environment in which artists
live. Members of the Coalition have access to group health insurance,
short-term dental, disability and life insurance. A monthly newspaper, slide
registry, job referral service, emergency fund, free lectures, workshops, and
numerous publications are also offered to those who join.

Grants starting at $50 are available to both men and women in the theatrical
field for use in an emergency. Scholarships are also given to young female
dramatists.
- Musicares Foundation

Musicares provides music people with emergency financial assistance for
HIV/AIDS treatment, critical illnesses, hospitalization, medical expenses, and
basic daily needs such as utilities and shelter. Through the Addition
Recovery Program, people are able to obtain treatment referrals, intervention
information, and may be eligible to receive financial assistance to treat
substance abuse and other addictions.
