Governor Doyle Appoints New Board Member
to the Wisconsin Arts Board
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle recently appointed Jerry Hembd PhD
of Superior to the Wisconsin Arts Board with a term to expire on May 1, 2007.
Dr. Hembd will complete the term made vacant by the passing of the late Mary M.
Giesen of Solon Springs.
Dr. Hembd is a State Specialist at UW-Extension and Associate
Professor in Business and Economics at UW-Superior. He is also the director of
the Northern Center for Community and Economic Development, which recently
initiated a research study entitled "The Impact of Crafts Artists on the
Northwest Wisconsin Economy."
"We are pleased to have Dr. Hembd join us," said Lt.
Governor Barbara Lawton, Chairperson of the Wisconsin Arts Board. "His
extensive community and economic development experience and rich insights from
his work overseas will be important to the vital work of the Arts Board."
The Wisconsin Arts Board is governed by a fifteen-member board
appointed by the Governor to serve three-year terms. Board members are
Wisconsin citizens recognized for their accomplishments in the arts,
humanities, business, education or public service. The board includes members
from urban and rural areas across the state and from diverse racial, economic
and cultural backgrounds. Board members set policy for the agency and approve
funding recommendations made by the peer review panels. The members meet a
minimum of four times per year, and all meetings are open to the public.
