Tell us your story
Help us celebrate the anniversary of the day that
Wisconsin first invested public dollars in Wisconsin’s arts groups and artists.
Email us a story or two about how the Arts Board—through its work, grants,
technical assistance, staff visits, board visits, convenings, workshops,
etc.—has affected your organization... your community... you... at any time
over these past 35 years. Send the email to
artsboard@wisconsin.gov.
We’ll be celebrating all year long, and we look
forward to showcasing those stories throughout the coming year!

Happy 35th Anniversary,
Wisconsin
Arts Board!
35 Tips for 35
years
On August 2, 1973, Governor Patrick Lucey signed
the state biennial budget bill that brought the Arts Board into existence.
According to “Arts Support Goes Public in Wisconsin” by Fannie Taylor,
“The bill provided administrative support of
$94,000 for the biennium, divided $45,200 in the first year and $49,300 in the
second. No state funding was provided for gifts and grants, but specific
authorization was given to receive federal grant monies. Provision was made for
an executive secretary...”
Wisconsin had an active state arts presence for
many years that predated the Arts Board, but Wisconsin became one of the last
of the fifty states to have a statutory state arts agency.
Since 1973, we have been dazzled by the creativity
of our artists, engaged by the many cultures that make up our state, brought
forward the voice of our communities and had a significant impact on our
state’s economy. We have accomplished this through the work of hundreds of
volunteer Arts Board members and thousands of peer panelists and millions of
grant dollars to artists, and arts and community organizations. Countless hours
of technical assistance directed by an extremely talented staff of committed
public servants have made it all happen. The support from the citizens of
Wisconsin through its legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts has
made it all possible.
